Abstract

The article analyzes the ritual of the Day of Purification (Atonement) — Yom Kippur, one of the most important institutions of the Old Testament, during which reconciliation with God took place and the sins of the entire people of Israel were forgiven. In the Christian tradition, Yom Kippur is considered in connection with the death of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Atoning sacrifice for the entire human race. The patristic interpretations of the rites of worship on the Day of Atonement are given and various views on the concept of «azazel» are analyzed.
