Abstract

Bishop Sergius' “Missionary Joys” is a wonderful source on many issues related to his missionary work in Japan. The author, who also has a bright writing talent, vividly and in detail describes not only his mission, but also everything he encounters on his way: This is the life of many people with their destinies (often difficult), their living conditions, thoughts. We involuntarily immerse ourselves together with the bishop in their thoughts and aspirations. Many of the information provided on the pages of the book is unique in itself, since they are not found anywhere else.

The author admires the local nature, some moments of his new life, but thoughts about his Homeland are constantly found in the travel notes of Bishop Sergius: sometimes he just casually remembers her, then he thinks about something related to Russia.

The article attempts to comprehend the meaning and significance of this unique monument for Russian history, for the history of the Russian Church. Bishop Sergius' missionary work was very successful. The book presents a vivid picture of the life of Orthodox people in Japan.
