The article examines various models of interaction between the state and religious organizations in matters of upbringing and education of children using the example of European countries, the United States and other countries. The author identifies three main models: 1) a secular state with an official religion or predominant denominations (Great Britain, Greece, Italy, etc.); 2) a secular state with partnerships with religious organizations (Germany, Austria, Spain, etc.); 3) a secular state with equidistant relations with all religious associations (USA, France, Portugal). Special attention is paid to the role of religious education in public and private schools, as well as the influence of historical and cultural traditions on the formation of educational policy. It is noted that the experience of foreign countries can be useful for Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, where the question of the role of the Orthodox Church in education remains controversial.
